National Geographic // Europe From Above
An unparalleled perspective
I was approached to conceptualise and produce the final key art for Season 4 of the popular Europe From Above series, on National Geographic.
The key art should encompass the idea of wanting to take viewers to new heights by journeying alongside the technology that enables National Geographic to get these incredible shots. With a chosen tagline, ‘An unparalleled perspective’, the tone of the Key art should express excitement and style with themes of velocity, flight and wonderment.
Beyond the hero key art seen here, I also designed episodic key art, see end of project.
After exploring a few avenues I tuned into the tagline of ‘An unparalleled perspective’ and took inspiration from started studying the work of Dutch artist Escher and more specifically the droste effect. Coined from the Dutch cocoa brand Droste, it was particularly popular in the 1940s.
After some experimentation, I realised that using a frame to hold the image would help with the simple type of droste effect I was looking to execute. I used the National Geographic yellow border to mask the European locations and draw the viewer into the key art.
Unfortunately, the key art took a different direction at the final stages of delivery due to changes in the programming.
